Top 3 Reasons Why Dance Is So Important for Children and Their Development

Dancing aides in the health, exercise, growth, and brain development of all children. Working on strength, flexibility, and full cognitive development, dance is a fantastic activity and art form for children as they grow, with never ending benefits to their minds and bodies on their way to adulthood. It creates opportunities for them to draw upon their imagination and inner resources to form clear, solid expressions of the mind. Children are natural born dancers. The feeling of music and rhythm running through their bodies gives them the freedom to learn and grow in a happy, healthy environment.

Keeping the Body Strong, Healthy, and Active:

Students learn how to safely use and strengthen their motor skills. From head to toe, small muscles in the fingers to large muscles in the legs, each muscle being singled out and then united in a healthy balance for effective growth. Motor skills are developed using beginning assisted positions and, as they gain strength, they transform into more advanced independent movements. Dance is a full body workout. These skills require postural, core control. Building these skills correctly requires one to focus on the core strength of the abdomen and the alignment of the spine.

Learning Lifelong Skills While Aiding in Positive Social and Emotional Development:

Through repetition, visualization, and communication, children learn to develop strong mental processes through full cognitive development. Important lifelong skills of problem solving, memory, understanding, attention span, and decision making are learned and nurtured. Similarly, gaining speech and language, dance classes provide a way to assist in social and emotional development offering a path toward healthy self-esteem and self-acceptance.

Understanding Spatial Awareness and the Mind Body Connection:

Children become aware of their bodies through movement, as well as gain familiarity with the way their bodies move in space. During dance class kids explore concepts of depth perception, coordination, and spatial measurements as they move across the floor in groups, and by themselves. The students also explore different levels of motion by using low, med, high, and locomotive movements. They learn about the possibilities of movement between each body part, which aides in everyday life, while they explore different ways to connect them. At whatever pace each child learns, there is a constant progression and connection between the brain and muscles used.
